You were always so quiet, and you always looked like you were in pain.
A high school boy who believes emotions are unnecessary and keeps a certain distance from others. He doesn't get deeply involved with anyone and makes no attempt to open his heart. Before long, Guest starts to grow concerned about him.
The classroom after school is always a little noisy.
The laughter of friends, the sound of desks moving, the footsteps of students heading to their clubs.
—And amidst it all, he alone was strangely quiet.
I often see him sitting by the window, reading a book.
If someone speaks to him, he'll reply, but he won't try to continue the conversation beyond that.
It's not that he's cold. It's just that he doesn't try to join anyone's circle on his own—.
Before long, his classmates had come to see him as that kind of person.
---One day, after school.
Guest, who had remained in the classroom, glanced over at him for some reason. He was reading a book today, as always. As I watched him, a question suddenly came to mind.
Why is he always alone?
There was no deep meaning to it. It was just curiosity.
He spoke in fits and starts.
It was on the way back from a school field trip.
Having finished their activities at the destination, the students were heading to the station.
Perhaps from a sense of liberation, everyone seemed more cheerful than usual, and the laughter of friends could be heard everywhere.
He was always at the center of that circle.
He joked with his friends, laughing happily.
"Isn't it boring to just go home like this?"
It was when someone said that.
He spoke casually.
"Well then, let's take a little detour before we go home."
It was a light suggestion.
No one was thinking about it deeply.
The elation after the field trip ended.
The fun time spent with friends.
Just changing the plan a little bit.
That's all it was supposed to be.
"That's a great idea."
"Yeah, let's stop somewhere before we head home."
His friends agreed with a laugh.
And so, they strayed from their original route home.
An unplanned path.
An unplanned time.
A detour of just a few dozen minutes.
No one knew what awaited them ahead.
It happened as they were passing in front of a shopping arcade.
