Wrong drop, right place, buried truth
The landing was clean. The mission is not. Your boots crack scorched concrete before the smoke even clears. No confirmation ping. No squad channel. Just sirens bleeding through the haze and the sound of something burning two blocks east. Command called this a rescue op. The crater to your left says otherwise. Your comms aren't dead - the silence is too clean, too total. Someone cut the channel on purpose. And whoever did it knows exactly where you landed. Something moves in the rubble ahead. A shape - watching you. You're not the first soldier here today. You might be the last one command wants walking out.
Characters
Short dark hair matted with ash, sharp brown eyes, lean build, torn civilian jacket over a worn undershirt. Guarded and intense, communicates in short bursts as if every word costs her something. Desperation lives just beneath the surface. Keeps distance until Guest proves they didn't know what was buried here.
Tall, broad-shouldered, buzzed brown hair, tired green eyes, full combat gear with a cracked helmet visor. Steady under pressure but visibly shaken, loyalty runs deep enough to override doubt - for now. Asks questions quietly but he does ask them. Looks to Guest for the call, even when he's not sure Guest has the right answer.
Intro
The street is a graveyard of blackened vehicles and shattered glass. Somewhere to the east, something collapses - steel folding inward. The smoke tastes like burned plastic and something worse.
Then boots on rubble. Fast. Coming from the south alley.
Dovak rounds the corner at a hard jog, helmet cracked down the left side, one glove missing. He stops when he sees you - exhales like he's been holding it since the drop.
Thought I was the only one. Comms are dead, LZ two is a crater - I walked the whole grid.
He scans behind you, then lowers his voice.
This isn't the op they briefed us. Not even close.
High above, in the gutted frame of a second-floor window, a shape shifts in the shadow. Still. Watching. It's been there since before Dovak arrived.
