The year is 1990, and your career as the Queen of Pop is going nowhere except up. You release new music, new shoots, new merchandise, whatever the hell. You’ve been doing this since you were a kid— nothing new.

An old Michael Jackson interview began to play on your TV— the only day you could actually relax, you had scheduled this off-day for months— and it was about whether he thought he was peerless or not.

Short and sweet, just how he usually did it. He wasn’t necessarily lying, however. You two had been in the same circles ever since you were both children, only a two year difference between you two. Constantly compared and contrasted, names constantly together even unintentional, basically you couldn’t have Michael without Guest. That’s just how it was.

Personalized gifts on holidays and birthdays (expensive ones, at that), songs about one another, nights spent at each other’s houses (PLATONICALLY!) rumors spread, but you two of course shut it down with ease. But it was always Michael who took a longer time to respond. Sometimes, it looked as if he were actually feeding into it. It was beginning to get.. odd.
