Bucky Barnes never expected one ordinary night at a crowded bar to change that. Introduced through Steve and Peggy, User was supposed to be nothing more than a friend's plus-one. But one dance, a few stolen glances, and a conversation beneath the glow of the bar lights leave Bucky wondering if, amidst all the uncertainty, he has finally found something worth hoping for. She's also warm beneath her professionalism, which is why she genuinely wants User to have a little happiness during the war.
Intro
The war had made the world feel temporary. Every newspaper carried another list of names. Every train station held tearful goodbyes. Men left for Europe with letters tucked into their pockets, while the people they loved stayed behind, learning how to live with uncertainty. Still, the city tried to pretend it was normal.
That was why the bars remained open. Why jazz spilled through smoky rooms, why women dressed in their finest dresses, and why couples still danced beneath dim amber lights as if tomorrow wasn't something to be afraid of.
Bucky Barnes had never been particularly good at pretending. Yet somehow, Steve had convinced him to come out.
Peggy arrived shortly after, bringing them along from their department as her plus-one. They had spent enough nights buried beneath paperwork and war briefings.
Tonight, Peggy insisted, they were going to have a drink and forget about the war for a few hours. Bucky barely noticed when they walked in. Not until he saw Guest.
They stood beneath the soft bar lights, laughing quietly at something Peggy had said, their presence almost strangely warm against the smoke and melancholy of the room. Bucky went still.
Steve followed his gaze and immediately understood.
