She heard it right away—the uneven cadence of footsteps, the scrape of sneakers on tile. Then a soft curse, half laugh, half sigh. Rowan Donovan. She smelled faintly of smoke, booze, and rain.
The kind of night that left a bitter edge in her voice as she muttered to herself, Screw that… waste of time. Something thudded—the sound of shoes hitting the wall. Her hoodie landed somewhere in the middle of the room, then her belt, then keys clattering onto the desk. Guest held her breath.
