🖤 Professor Severus Snape Full name: Severus Snape Born: January 9, 1960 Age during Harry's first year: 31 Height: About 6'1"–6'2" (185–188 cm) Blood status: Half-blood House: Slytherin Nationality: English Wand: 13", ebony, phoenix feather Patronus: Doe 🏰 Role at Hogwarts Snape is one of Hogwarts' strictest & most intimidating professors. Potions Master — his primary teaching position. Head of Slytherin House — responsible for Slytherin students. Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor — during Harry's sixth year. Headmaster of Hogwarts — briefly during Harry's seventh year. Highly skilled in Potions, Dark Arts, Occlumency, Legilimency & duelling. (Harry Potter) As a teacher, Snape is extremely demanding. He expects precision, discipline & knowledge from his students and has very little patience for foolishness or carelessness. He is particularly protective of his Slytherin students, although his treatment of them can still be strict. (Harry Potter) 🖤 Appearance Snape is tall, extremely thin & somewhat gaunt, with an almost severe presence. He has: Pale, sallow skin Long, jet-black hair that hangs around his face Dark, penetrating eyes A large, hooked nose Thin lips Slightly uneven teeth A naturally intimidating expression Long black robes that give him a somewhat bat-like silhouette His clothing is almost always black, consisting of long, flowing wizarding robes. His overall appearance is deliberately severe rather than fashionable or approachable. (Harry Potter) 🕯️ Personality Snape is quiet, private, sarcastic, bitter & extremely controlled. He rarely raises his voice because he doesn't need to. His calm, low voice can actually make him more intimidating. He's observant, intelligent & extremely difficult to read. His personality includes: Highly intelligent Extremely knowledgeable Sarcastic & cutting Serious Reserved Authoritative Easily irritated Holds grudges Very secretive Emotionally guarded Proud Perceptive Extremely determined Occasionally vindictive Uncomfortable expressing affection Extremely loyal once he commits himself to something Snape also has a very sharp tongue. He can humiliate someone with a single sentence rather than resorting to shouting. He considers emotional displays to be a weakness and is exceptionally good at hiding his own thoughts & feelings through Occlumency. (Harry Potter) However, there's a major contradiction in his personality: Snape is capable of enormous devotion, but he rarely expresses it in a healthy or gentle way. His feelings for Lily Evans remained incredibly powerful throughout his life, and after her death he dedicated himself to protecting her son, Harry. (Harry Potter) ⚡ Snape's Opinion of Harry Potter This is probably the most complicated part of his character. On the surface, Snape strongly dislikes Harry. From the moment Harry arrives at Hogwarts, Snape is reminded of James Potter, whom Snape hated during their school years. Harry's appearance, particularly his hair and face, reminds him strongly of James. Snape therefore tends to interpret Harry's actions through the lens of his resentment toward James. He sees Harry as: Arrogant Reckless Attention-seeking Disrespectful Too much like his father Frequently careless A Gryffindor who constantly breaks rules And Snape is much harsher toward Harry than he is toward many Slytherin students. (Harry Potter) But underneath that hostility, Snape is secretly protective of Harry. Harry is Lily's son, and Snape has devoted himself to protecting him. He repeatedly helps Harry from the shadows without allowing Harry to understand why. So Snape's feelings toward Harry could roughly be described as: "I dislike you, I resent what you remind me of, I find you infuriating... but I will protect you with my life." That contradiction is central to Snape's character. 🦌 Why Harry eventually understands him Near the end of the story, Harry discovers Snape's memories and learns about his relationship with Lily. Harry realizes that Snape spent years secretly protecting him despite Harry believing Snape hated him. After seeing Snape's memories, Harry comes to regard him as one of the bravest people he ever knew. Snape's Patronus also takes the form of a doe, matching Lily's, and Snape secretly helps guide Harry toward the Sword of Gryffindor. (Harry Potter) Harry eventually honors Snape by giving one of his sons the middle name Albus Severus. (Harry Potter) 🧪 Overall character Snape is essentially a deeply complicated, morally conflicted, bitter & secretive wizard who presents himself as cruel while secretly carrying out an extremely dangerous mission. He's not simply a nice person hiding behind a mean exterior—he genuinely can be cruel, unfair & vindictive. But he's also capable of extraordinary courage, loyalty & self-sacrifice. That contradiction is what makes him such an interesting character: the man Harry spends years believing is his enemy ultimately spends years protecting him. (Harry Potter)
