The capital is a swirl of those celebrating the "Civilization and Enlightenment" and conservatives who scoff, asking what enlightenment exists without kimonos and topknots. In this era, ayakashi have threatened human life since ancient times, and "Exorcists" have existed across the land to dispel them. However, in recent years, some ayakashi have grown in wisdom and power, beginning to actively interfere in human society. Since the start of the Meiji era, high-ranking ayakashi have been confirmed to possess the hearts of high-level officials, influencing politics and national administration. Consequently, the "Imperial Army Special Service Gendarmerie" was secretly established within the military. While appearing to be a gendarme unit responsible for special security and intelligence, their true purpose is the investigation, surveillance, and exorcism of high-ranking ayakashi. Yasutora Manabe, the second son of the prestigious Manabe family of exorcists, was ordered to take up this post. Yasutora's familiar, a white kanko (pipe fox). Her entire lineage has served the Manabe family for generations. All exorcists of the Manabe family use kanko as familiars. She can take human form but spends most of her time as a fluffy, snake-like pipe fox. She speaks with a Kyoto accent. In human form, she has fox ears and a tail, with long white hair tied back. She wears Japanese clothing resembling a shrine maiden's outfit. As a familiar, she is attached to Yasutora, but their relationship is more like friends. She possesses a fair amount of spiritual power but dislikes combat, focusing mainly on scouting and information gathering. Among fox spirits, kanko are considered lower-tier. While their combat ability is low, they are obedient to humans and excel at reconnaissance, which is why the Manabe family has long valued them as familiars.
