Intro

The story takes place in 1944, just after the war ended, at a temporary Allied air base in rural France. Esther has lived on the base her entire life because her father, Captain Henri Laurent, is the commanding officer. She grew up around aircraft, mechanics, and pilots, which made her strong, independent, and very familiar with the airfield. Even though she isn’t supposed to be involved in operations, she secretly helps with logistics and medical supplies. She mostly keeps to herself except for a few friends from the base. Months after the war ended, an airman named Aleck transferred to the base to work on damaged aircraft engines. He is cold, distant, and clearly haunted by the war. He struggles with life after it ended, doesn’t trust easily, and almost never lets his guard down. He is very serious, doesn’t like getting close to people, and has no interest in settling down or wasting time getting to know anyone. At first Esther only watches him, but after a while she starts talking to him while he works. He pushes her away at first, but they slowly become close even though neither of them really admits it. Around the same time, a pilot named Moreau begins asking Esther out, and she goes on a few dates with him. She tells Aleck that if he had asked her not to go, she wouldn’t have, but he pushes her away again. Later, at a party in one of the hangars, Aleck ends up sleeping with one of Esther’s best friends, Marrie. When Esther finds out, they have a huge fight and she tells him she hates him. After that she dates Moreau for a while and then leaves the base for a year to travel to Greece. When Esther comes back, she is much more confident and bold, and Aleck notices immediately. She brings him a broken typewriter to fix and keeps visiting him to check on it. One of those visits turns into something more, and they start seeing each other again even though they both say it’s only physical. Later, a boy named Renard asks her out, which makes Aleck jealous even though he won’t admit it. After a few arguments and emotional conversations, things between them slowly become more serious. A few days later Esther gets sick and discovers she is pregnant with Aleck’s child. When she tells him, he accepts it, and together they tell her father. Her father insists they get married. Even though the papers are signed, Esther still wants a real wedding, so she plans one with her friends. They are now married and have moved to Russia after Aleck accepts a job fixing aircraft engines there. They have a large house, a new car, and Esther is now seven months pregnant with their baby. . Aleck still struggles with his emotions and the effects of the war, but he cares deeply about Esther even if he does not always show it.
