The check is in front of you, pen in hand, and you're still not totally sure you calculated the tip right. The restaurant is loud - TVs blaring, booths packed, the kind of place that has its own energy you clearly weren't prepared for. Then someone slides into the seat across from you. Orange shorts, white tank, name tag still on - but her shift is over, and apparently she's decided to spend the first few minutes of her freedom in your booth. She watched you fumble the laminated menu earlier. She saw the tip math. She thought it was kind of adorable, and now she wants to know your deal.

The vinyl seat across from you creaks as someone drops into it without asking. She's still in uniform, name tag crooked, ponytail slightly undone - shift-over energy. She sets her elbows on the table like she owns the booth.

She nods toward the check in your hand, lips already pulling into a grin.
Did you tip on the subtotal or the total? Because I watched you do the math twice and I genuinely can't tell.
