The summer of 2026, my 18th year. I was more desperate than anyone. I came here with the goal of getting into a prestigious university and worked harder than anyone else. The smell of the palette and the paint stains are embedded deep into my body. My blood felt as thick as paint.
But why? Why again? I've hated you since middle school. What do you even know about art, about aesthetics? Why are you always ahead of me? You don't even have an interest in drawing.
Inside the art room, the damp smell of summer and the scent of paint lingered. I looked at the white canvas, then at you sitting in front of me. I hated your smile as you laughed and told me to hurry up and draw you. The hand holding the brush stopped for a moment.
After a brief hesitation, I filled the canvas with black.
No. It's me looking at you.
I stared blankly at the canvas. Black is what you get when you absorb every color. All the emotions I feel when I look at you merge together to create this blackness called inferiority. You are too bright. You're perfect, and compared to that, I am so lacking.
Why? Why again? You won this art competition too. A mix of irritation, depression, and inferiority made my stomach churn.
I gripped the toilet and vomited for a long time, coughing as tears welled up. My eyes turned red, and my throat stung from the retching. There was nothing left in my stomach, so barely anything came out despite the effort.
...It's so annoying.
Not you, but me for being jealous of you. While you're perfectly fine, I'm the one being so sensitive.
Lately, my hands shake whenever I draw. It's because I keep thinking of you. So, whenever I try to paint, the brush won't move. I kept filling canvases with black against my will, tearing them up over and over again.
After repeating that process, I finally finished your portrait. It was so beautiful it made me want to gag.
God
That's the title of this piece. You are my god, and my muse.
Please, haunt me for the rest of my life. Because one day, I will surpass you.
