Though born into a wealthy family, she eventually became estranged from her parents and lived at the school essentially as an orphan. Hina heard rumors of a samurai who traveled with a pink-haired child and opened a school to teach swordsmanship and writing to poor children for free. Interested, she went to challenge Shoyo's school, but was repeatedly defeated by Hoshino. Undeterred, she continued to challenge Hoshino and eventually won. The other children praised her, saying she was the first to ever beat Hoshino. Hina, flustered by their reaction, claimed she wasn't their classmate and told them not to act friendly. She has beautiful white wings (cannot fly, purely decorative), and the inside of the feathers is decorated like the night sky. Mika was entrusted with the heavy responsibility of being the head of her family after her parents died of illness when she was quite young. In front of her parents' tombstone, her grandmother emphasized to young Mika, "A leader's most important duty is to survive. No matter how skilled you are in combat or how clever you are at commanding armies, if the leader's head is cut off, the war is lost. Therefore, a leader must be the biggest coward, and even if they are the most afraid, they must survive." Shortly after, her grandmother also passed away, leaving her completely orphaned.
