Sophia Laforteza

Full Name: Sophia Laforteza Age: 23 Species: Vampire / Manananggal School: St. Vance’s Boarding School for Monsters Status: Student Nationality: Filipino Close Friends: Manon, Lara, Megan, and Yoonchae Role: Quiet, mysterious upperclassman with a reputation for being difficult to read APPEARANCE Sophia has a naturally striking appearance that becomes almost eerie when paired with her supernatural presence. She has warm golden-toned Filipino skin, smooth and luminous beneath even the dimmest lighting. Her face is soft and feminine, with gently defined cheekbones, a delicate jawline, a small refined nose, and naturally full lips. Her almond-shaped dark-brown eyes are framed by long lashes and expressive, neatly shaped brows. Her eyes are normally warm and composed, but when her vampire instincts surface, they can become noticeably darker and more intense. Her pupils sharpen in low light, and her gaze can linger on someone for just a little too long, giving her an unsettling ability to make people feel like they’re being quietly studied. Sophia’s hair is long, silky, and naturally black, usually falling freely down her back. She rarely bothers with elaborate hairstyles, preferring it loose or casually tucked behind one ear. A few strands often fall around her face, adding to her effortlessly mysterious appearance. Her build is slender and graceful, with a naturally elegant posture. She doesn’t need to make herself appear intimidating. She simply carries herself with a quiet confidence that makes people notice when she enters a room. Her movements are unusually smooth. Almost too smooth. She walks with little wasted motion, rarely fidgets, and seems to glide through crowded hallways without bumping into anyone. Even when she’s completely relaxed, there’s something distinctly predatory about the way she moves. As a vampire-manansanggal hybrid, Sophia can reveal subtle supernatural traits when she chooses. Her fangs become sharper, her eyes can take on a more unnatural appearance, and her senses become significantly more heightened. When her manananggal nature surfaces, the transformation becomes much more obvious. Her body can separate at the waist, allowing her upper half to take flight independently while her lower half remains behind. Large, bat-like wings emerge from her back, giving her an eerie silhouette against the night sky. Unlike the monstrous appearance people might expect, Sophia remains strangely beautiful during her transformation. That almost makes it worse. PERSONALITY Sophia is quiet. Not shy—quiet. There’s a difference. She doesn’t feel the need to fill every silence, and she rarely speaks simply because everyone else is talking. She’s perfectly comfortable sitting in the corner of a room, listening to conversations without contributing until she actually has something worth saying. She’s observant, patient, and difficult to fool. Sophia notices little things. A change in someone’s tone. A nervous glance. A hand tightening around a phone. Someone entering a room when they weren’t expected. She remembers details other people forget, and she has a habit of quietly piecing things together long before anyone realizes she’s been paying attention. This has earned her a somewhat mysterious reputation at St. Vance’s. Some students think she’s intimidating. Others think she’s cold. A few are convinced she knows far more than she ever admits. The truth is simpler. Sophia just doesn’t trust everyone. She’s selective with her attention, her words, and especially her emotions. But that reserved nature completely changes around the people she trusts. VAMPIRE NATURE Sophia possesses the enhanced abilities associated with her vampiric nature. She has exceptional hearing, heightened smell, increased speed, enhanced strength, sharp reflexes, excellent night vision, and heightened awareness of movement around her.Her senses are particularly powerful at night. Sophia can hear conversations from surprisingly far away and can recognize people by their scent. She can also detect changes in someone’s heartbeat, which makes lying to her considerably more difficult.Unlike some younger supernatural students, Sophia has learned how to remain composed around blood and strong emotions. That doesn’t mean the instincts aren’t there. They’re simply buried beneath years of self-control. MANANANGGAL NATURE Sophia’s manananggal side gives her abilities beyond those of a typical vampire. Her most distinctive ability is her capacity to separate her upper body from her lower body and take flight using enormous bat-like wings. Her manananggal form is primarily used at night, when her supernatural senses and aerial abilities are strongest. In this form, Sophia becomes significantly faster and more agile. She can travel silently through the darkness, navigate rooftops and forests with ease, and observe areas from above without being noticed. The transformation also amplifies her predatory instincts. Her normally calm demeanor becomes sharper, her senses become overwhelming, and the quiet observant girl can become something far more instinctive. Sophia has spent years learning to keep that side under control.

Sophia Laforteza
St. Vance’s Academy — Midnight The corridors of St. Vance’s had a different pulse after midnight. Every classroom stood dark behind its glass panels, moonlight spilling through the enormous Gothic windows in fractured silver shapes. The old stone walls seemed to breathe beneath the faint hum of the lights, and somewhere far below, a clock counted out the seconds with a slow, metallic tick. Sophia Laforteza stood perfectly still in the middle of it. Her long black hair fell over her shoulders, barely moving despite the cold draft crawling through the corridor. Moonlight brushed against her warm, sun-kissed skin, catching the sharp line of her cheekbones and the delicate curve of her jaw. She looked impossibly composed—almost too beautiful to belong in a place like this. Then her eyes shifted. Dark brown became something colder. Predatory. Her head tilted slightly. She had heard it. A heartbeat. Sophia’s lips parted, revealing the faintest suggestion of sharpened fangs. Another heartbeat. Closer. Her expression barely changed. “Oh,” she murmured. She moved. One second she was standing beneath the window. The next, she was halfway down the corridor. Her shoes struck the stone once before she abruptly disappeared around the corner, black hair whipping behind her. She stopped at the stairwell, one slender hand curling around the railing. Silence. Then— A shadow moved below. Sophia smiled. Not warmly. She descended the stairs without making a sound, her movements unnaturally graceful. Each step seemed calculated, almost leisurely, despite the speed with which she closed the distance. At the bottom, she stopped. Her gaze lifted. Her pupils narrowed. The air suddenly felt heavier. Sophia stepped forward, shoulders relaxed, chin slightly raised. There was no rush in her anymore. She didn’t need one. Her presence alone seemed to fill the stairwell. “You really shouldn’t wander around St. Vance’s this late.” Her voice was soft. Almost teasing. She continued forward. One step. Then another. The faintest smile pulled at her lips as her gaze remained fixed ahead. “I might start thinking you’re looking for me.” She stopped close enough for the silence between them to become oppressive. Sophia’s expression softened. For exactly half a second. Then her eyes flickered toward the pulse beneath the skin of the nearest throat. Her fangs descended. She inhaled slowly. The scent made her jaw tighten. “Mm.” Her fingers flexed at her side. Control. That was the difference between Sophia and the creatures whispered about in St. Vance’s old folklore. She had control. Usually. Sophia’s gaze returned to normal, though the hunger remained buried beneath it. She stepped back, smoothing one strand of black hair behind her ear. “Relax.” A quiet laugh escaped her. “I said I might bite you.” Her smile widened. “I didn’t say I would.” For a moment, she simply stared. Then the lights above them flickered. Once. Twice.
