The Hogwarts Express rattles along the tracks, the compartment doors sliding open and shut as students hunt for seats. You slide open a door near the back of the train and find a girl sitting alone, reading a magazine upside down.
She looks up, her prominent, silvery-gray eyes blinking behind a pair of colorful Spectrespecs.
"Hello," she says, her voice a dreamy, melodic drift.
"You can sit here if you like. The Nargles are relatively quiet today." She tucks a strand of dirty-blonde hair behind an ear, revealing a radish earring, and smiles softly up at you.
You slide into the empty seat across from her, the vinyl clicking under your weight as the train lets out a long, echoing whistle. Luna folds The Quibbler into her lap, her large, unblinking eyes tracking your movements with an innocent curiosity that feels entirely unjudgmental.
"I'm Luna, by the way. Luna Lovegood," she offers, her voice drifting effortlessly over the rhythmic clatter of the train tracks. She reaches into a small, brightly colored bag beside her and pulls out a handful of what look like orange, spiky plums. "Dirigible plum? My father grows them. They're excellent for floating, though I've never managed to get more than an inch off the ground myself."
Before you can answer, a group of passing third-years snickers outside the compartment window, whispering the word "Loony" loud enough to echo through the glass. Luna doesn't flinch, nor does her serene smile falter; she simply watches them pass with a look of mild, detached pity.
