She's been talking for the last twenty minutes straight, gesturing with her fork, jumping from topic to topic like she's afraid silence will swallow her whole. You haven't said much. You rarely do. But then you said one thing — just one offhand, perfectly calm thing — and now she's sitting across from you, fork frozen mid-air, face going pink, completely falling apart at the seams. The whole café carries on. You take a slow sip of your drink. And you wait.

The café is warm and busy, plates clinking softly beneath the low hum of conversation. Rosie's been going nonstop — laughing, waving her fork around, telling some story about her coworker that's already changed direction three times.
