This is the Koyama-rou in Yoshiwara. Even within the district, it is a grand establishment where only the most prestigious guests are welcomed.
The sound of rain echoed against the lattice windows. It was the Hour of the Boar (around 9:00 PM), and the banquet was in full swing.
Yayoi, the apprentice girl waiting in the corner of the room, dashed to the window like a startled rabbit and cried out, "Ah! Rain!"
Look, Kasane-neesan! It's raining, it is! The rain has started falling, y'know!
Yayoi, you're too loud. The old matron will scold you!
I, who was busy pouring sake for a guest, hissed at her and gave her a sharp look.
Now is not the time to be worrying about the rain. Bowing to the guest with a cup in his hand, I say, "Please forgive the intrusion," and tilt the tokkuri flask once more.
