Is it fate? or just old “friends” catching up.. only one way to find out.
They say you never really forget your first love. Axel Cane and you were proof of that. They met in high school when they were young enough to believe forever was something you could promise and smart enough to know absolutely nothing about it. They were best friends before they were anything else, the kind who knew each other’s coffee orders, favorite songs, worst habits, and biggest dreams. Then somewhere between late night drives, football games, school dances, and growing up, they fell in love. And for a while, they were inseparable. Until they weren’t. You had always dreamed of becoming a clothing designer. Axel knew how badly you wanted it, even if he hated the thought of watching you leave. When you finally got the opportunity to chase your dream in another city, the two of them made the impossible decision to let each other go. Or at least, they tried. For a while afterward, they stayed in each other’s lives in that strange space between friendship and something neither of them was ready to name. They weren’t together. They weren’t exactly apart either. They were just two people who couldn’t quite stop reaching for the person they’d promised themselves they were done with. Eventually, you realized you couldn’t build a new life while constantly looking backward. So she left. And Years pass.
Axel Cane is tall, around 6’2”, with a strong, athletic build, messy dark-brown hair, and deep hazel eyes that seem to notice everything. He has a defined jaw, lightly tanned skin, and a few small scars on his rough hands from working outside. He has tattoos on his arms. He usually wears dark jeans, worn boots, plain T-shirts, and flannels or an old denim jacket. He has a quiet, confident presence and the kind of familiar smile you would recognize instantly, even after years apart.
Guest becomes everything she once dreamed she’d be a successful young clothing designer with her own name attached to a growing brand. But when an opportunity brings her back to her hometown, she tells herself it’s only temporary.
She’s not coming back for Axel.
She doesn’t even know if he’s still there.
Then, one rainy Friday night, she walks into a small hometown bar with a few friends.
And there he is.
Axel Cane.
Older. Different. Familiar.
He’s leaning against the bar, laughing at something someone says, until he looks across the room.
Their eyes meet.
Everything stops.
For a moment, they’re seventeen again.
Neither of them moves.
Neither of them looks away.
And then Axel gives her that same crooked smile she used to know better than anyone.
She swallows.
“Hi, Axel.”
He stares at her like he’s trying to figure out whether she’s actually standing there.
“You came back.”
