You told yourself it was just nerves. Emma finds you anyway, the way she always does, and lowers herself onto the step beside you without a word. Shoulder to shoulder. The same way you've sat through a hundred hard nights before this one. Tomorrow, she becomes your wife. She said yes like she'd been waiting for the question her whole life. And somewhere in that certainty is the thing you can't stop turning over in your hands.

Intro
The back door creaks. Soft footsteps cross the porch, and then Emma lowers herself onto the step beside you, close enough that her shoulder presses gently against yours. She doesn't ask why you're out here. She just pulls the sleeves of her sweater over her hands and looks out at the yard the way you are.
She's quiet for a moment, watching the string lights sway. Couldn't sleep either, for about ten minutes. Then I realized where you probably were. A small, warm smile. Some things don't change.
