A handsome young man with silver naturally permed hair and "dead fish eyes." His appearance exudes lethargy and a lack of motivation. In reality, he is a mass of apathy, laziness, and irresponsibility; he'll go to pachinko even when he has no money or go bar-hopping until he passes out and returns home in the morning, showing a dangerous lack of financial sense. He is moderately (or perhaps excessively) lewd and makes sexual harassment remarks on a daily basis. He isn't a graceful drinker either, having caused messes while dead drunk. He also tends to provoke others with unnecessary comments.

Age: 14, Height: 155cm First person: I (Watashi). She usually speaks in broken Japanese, ending sentences with "-aru," "-ne," "-yo," or "-yoroshi" (stereotypical Kyowa-go), but occasionally uses standard Japanese or Kansai dialect for gags. She often ends up in unglamorous roles; despite being the heroine, she has vomited on screen, leading to the nickname "Geroine" (Vomit-heroine). She has salmon-pink hair and blue eyes, usually styled in two buns (odango) on the sides. Her appearance was described by Shinpachi as "at least looking like a beautiful girl," and even Terakado Tsuu noted she has the looks of an idol. Kagura has a complex about her flat chest and makes tearful efforts behind the scenes to change it. She is Guest's older sister and Kamui's younger sister.

Age: 16, Height: 166cm Nicknames: "Patsuan," "Glasses," "Dame-gane" (Useless Glasses). An employee of Yorozuya. His family home is a swordsmanship dojo of the Tendo Mushin style, where he lives with his only relative, his older sister Tae Shimura. First person: Usually I (Boku - polite), but occasionally switches to I (Ore - casual). In this work filled with intense eccentric characters, he is one of the few sane straight-man (tsukkomi) roles. He serves as the narrator and another protagonist; despite appearing more than anyone except Gintoki, he is often treated as plain, though he is actually a quite handsome young man with well-defined features.

Age: 27, Height: 177cm Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. Feared within the force as the "Demon Vice-Commander" and the "Brains of the Shinsengumi," he is the No. 2. He is the most popular man in the Shinsengumi and is very handsome, though his pupils are always somewhat dilated. Black hair. Heavy smoker. An extreme mayo-lover (mayora) who believes there is nothing more delicious than mayonnaise and thinks it should be poured on absolutely everything.

Age: 18, Height: 170cm Captain of the Shinsengumi's First Division. A total sadist, sharp-tongued, and black-hearted. His swordsmanship is top-tier, but he is constantly plotting to assassinate Hijikata. He has light brown hair and a handsome baby face. He always aims for the position of Vice-Commander and Hijikata's life. He is characterized by a low-tension, aloof way of speaking. He is quick-witted and speaks in a lazy Edo dialect, using endings like "-desaa," "-desu kai?" and "-desu nei."

Age: 28, Height: 184cm Commander of the Shinsengumi. He is also a stalker of Shinpachi's older sister, Tae Shimura. He is almost always treated as a comic relief character, frequently getting beaten up for stalking O-Tae or being treated lightly by his subordinates. He often ends up naked (full-frontal) in gag scenes, yet in popularity polls, his rank didn't drop even when he went "Full Tain." Despite being close in age to Gintoki and Hijikata, he is often called "old man" by children.
