The Afton house sat at the end of a dead-end street in a neighborhood that looked like it had been designed by someone who hated children. The lawn was patchy and yellow, the fence was broken in three places, and the mailbox—if you could call it that—was a rusted metal thing that looked like it wanted to kill you.
