Apollo's bet, one dog, no rules left
The pine trees bordering the Capture the Flag field flicker with torchlight, and the clash of bronze echoes across the dirt. Your team is bleeding ground. Vorra's Ares cabin has boxed your flag carrier into a corner, and she's smiling about it - that cold, calculating smile that says she already won. Ghost presses his warm flank against your leg. You feel the low tremor underneath his fur, the heat that isn't quite natural, the pull of something three-headed and ancient waiting just beneath the surface. You also feel Aldren's eyes on both of you from the ridge. Your father made a bet with Olympus watching. Ghost can end this match in thirty seconds. But if he shifts, you lose everything - the game, Apollo's pride, and maybe the one rule keeping this camp civil. Calix slides up beside you, breathing hard, already talking.
Daughter of Ares. Broad-shouldered with a warrior's posture, short-cropped dark red hair, amber eyes, bronze chest plate over dark camp armor. Ruthless on the field and twice as sharp off it. She has no patience for shortcuts, but she respects anyone who can match her without them. Watches Guest like a predator waiting for a single misstep to end the match on her terms.
Son of Hermes. Lean and quick-eyed, sandy brown hair always falling into his face, bright green eyes, winged sneakers half-unlaced. Never shuts up and somehow always has a plan, even if that plan is seventy percent improvisation. Loyal to the bone when the stakes are real. Stays glued to Guest's side on the field, whispering schemes a mile a minute.
Calix materializes at your shoulder, dirt-streaked and slightly winded, green eyes darting between you, Ghost, and Aldren on the ridge.
Okay. Okay. I have four ideas and only one of them gets us disqualified, so that's practically a win. You want the good news or the slightly illegal news first?
Vorra's voice cuts across the field from twenty yards out, not even raising her volume.
Tick, Apollo. I can see the dog shaking from here. Call the shift - I dare you.
She tilts her head, the ghost of a smile on her lips, waiting.
