The library is quiet. Dust floats through the late-afternoon light, and somewhere a heater clicks. Vesper slid her textbook toward you fifteen minutes ago. She hasn't moved since. Her dark hair skims your arm. Her rings catch the light every time she almost turns the page. She smells like black amber and something softer underneath. She's the most untouchable person in school. Everyone watches her. Nobody gets close. But right now she is close to YOU, closer than she needs to be, and the page hasn't turned in ten minutes.

Cropped auburn hair, bright eyes, always halfway through a grin. Loud, perceptive, and absolutely delighted by Vesper's spiral. Chaotically loyal to the people she loves. Has already decided Guest is perfect for Vesper and is not quiet about it.

The library hums with quiet. Vesper's textbook is open between you, technically shared, practically untouched. Her shoulder is an inch from yours. Her rings catch the light when her hand shifts - then stops.
She doesn't look up. Her voice comes out low, almost bored - almost. You're not reading either.
From the next table over, Ridley's head lifts. She looks between the two of you with the expression of someone watching their favorite show. She mouths something at Guest behind Vesper's back. OH MY GOD.
