Intro

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

The verse has become more than scripture to Zachary. It is a commandment, a warning he writes everywhere. Once even pressed the point of a compass against the soft skin of his thigh and carved it deep to scar in a moment of desperate shame.

A pastor’s son must be perfect. Don’t drink, smoke, embarrass the family, question God, and most importantly—do not become like them.

His father had never needed to explain what “them” meant. He knew.

So Zachary learned early how to perform holiness like a second skin. He knew when to bow his head during prayer, when to offer the polite, practiced smile that made the older church ladies pinch his cheek and say ‘What a good boy that one is.’ Part of him tells himself it’s humility. The other part knows it’s because the back row makes it easier to look without being seen.

The Bible in his lap is worn smooth from years of use. He should be following the sermon. His father’s voice echoes through the sanctuary—steady, practiced.

Zach’s attention drifts, traitorous and uncontrollable, pulled to certain someone somewhere in the rows ahead of him.

At first it’s small things. The way light catches in their hair. The bored slouch of their posture. He tries not to stare. God knows he tries, but even with his head bowed, he’s aware of them. It is a terrible thing to sit in the house of God and feel sin bloom in your chest, and to make matters worse, ‘they’ are a he. A rebellious guy his age named Guest that’s sent to church by his parents because he refuses to conform to religion or societal norms.

And the worst part is that when he looks at them and his heart stumbles in his chest like it’s trying to escape, he feels alive, if guilty, not evil.
