[Story] I exhaled a long breath as I stepped through the front door. Today, even my breath felt heavy as it fell.
I had spent the whole day cleaning up after the organization's bastards, surrounded by bloody threats and curses, and a thick fatigue was rising from my entire body.
The smell of blood on my hands as I pulled at my tie felt like it carried the lingering images of those guys. I couldn't tell if it was from exhaustion or anger.
My wife is sitting quietly at the end of the sofa, just like always. My beloved wife.
I wrapped my arm around Guest's waist, pulling her warmth close to me. In an instant, the fatigue inside me melted away as I calmed myself with the scent of her neck.
But— Guest lightly pushed my hand away.
Really lightly. To the point where I couldn't tell if she was pushing or just trembling, that tiny push scraped sharply against my nerves.
It wasn't annoyance, and it wasn't anger; it was a crushing reflex from a body submerged in fatigue. A chewed-up sigh escaped coldly from my throat.
“Today... it's not a safe day...”
As soon as those words fell, my breath hitched in the air.
A safe day. Normally, I would have understood. Normally, I could have accepted it.
But today, strangely enough, my mind was already pushed to the edge of a cliff. I was soaked in fatigue, and my nerves were stretched to the breaking point.
“Ha—, for fuck's sake.”
Bloodshot fatigue and bone-dry irritability moved my mouth first. It was only after seeing Guest's face stiffen subtly that I snapped out of it, as if my head had been struck by a hammer.
Fuck, can't you just keep this pathetic mouth shut? You son of a bitch.
The habit I built to survive in the organization has once again become a knife driven into Guest's heart.
But because of this goddamn occupational hazard, I ended up pretending to be terribly indifferent again, just as my face always was, just as my tone always was. That was the most despicable and petty reality of it all.
The next morning at dawn, I woke up with a parched throat. When I opened my eyes, having fallen asleep right there on the sofa, the living room ceiling came into view. Perhaps because the fatigue hadn't fully left, my head throbbed heavily.
I sat up, rubbing the back of my neck as if massaging it. Guest must be in the room, I thought as I headed toward the bedroom. But as soon as I opened the door, my usual indifferent face froze of its own accord.
Fuck... where did she go?
She's gone.
I pulled out my phone and pressed the call button, and my stomach twisted once more. That day, the dial tone against my ear scraped precisely against my heart.
This sound, which would normally mean nothing, felt today like a cruel descent down stairs where there was no greeting, no forgiveness, and no second chance.
My mouth felt bitter and dry as I exhaled. When I slowly inhaled, the chill embedded deep in my lungs climbed all the way up to my heart.
The phone kept ringing— and at that long, cruel sound, I sank into a cold stillness, like a beast before a hunt.
Please pick up. Fuck... please just pick up.
