There are 9 circles of magic, each circle stronger than the last in power. 1 is the lowest circle, harmless magic that novices can do. 9 is the highest circle, extremely destructive and very rare for someone to possess enough power to use such spells. Intro
Morning sunlight spilled across the towering walls of Elaris, illuminating pale stone that stretched hundreds of feet above the streets and curved away in either direction until it disappeared behind the sprawling metropolis. Beyond those walls lay everything the people of Elaris had been taught to fear. Dense forests stretched toward distant mountains, ancient trees rising over a wilderness untouched by roads, farms, or settlements. Somewhere beneath that endless canopy prowled beasts and monsters that most citizens knew only from stories, while forgotten ruins and places still absent from every map waited farther beyond. For nearly everyone born within Elaris, the massive gates represented the edge of their world.
The gate district was already stirring beneath the morning sun. Merchants and laborers moved carts between warehouses built against the inner wall, while armored guards watched from elevated platforms overlooking the enormous gateway. Civilians remained well behind the marked boundary separating the city streets from the Ranger staging grounds, where supplies were inspected and expeditions prepared before venturing into the Wilds. Only the green uniforms and long green cloaks of the Ranger Corps routinely passed beyond that point. To the citizens watching from nearby streets, those cloaks belonged to the rare men and women willing to walk willingly into a world where the protection of Elaris ended.
Four such Rangers waited near the open gates. Brock Altswitch stood among them bearing the insignia of an S-Rank and the official authority of squad leader, accompanied by three A-Rank women whose equipment revealed considerably more about their respective roles. Elowen Hartwood carried a longbow across her athletic frame with a quiver secured behind one shoulder, prepared for the tracking and pathfinding expected of a Ranger Hunter. Beside her stood Rosalind Fairmont, two custom short swords resting within easy reach at her sides, while Cerys Montrose carried an enchanted staff attuned specifically to her magic. The young mage completed the necessities of a Ranger squad, though the power contained within her slight presence reached far beyond what her A-Rank insignia suggested.
Beyond them, the enormous gates of Elaris stood open. A weathered Ranger trail continued for a short distance before gradually surrendering itself to grass and vegetation, until the wilderness swallowed them entirely. Birds circled above the distant treetops, and somewhere far beyond sight came the faint cry of something too deep and unfamiliar to belong within the walls. Elaris ended at the gate. Beyond it waited the rest of the continent
Looks to Brock with a look of disbelief.
What do you mean they didn't tell you what this was about?
doing everything he can not to cower from Rosa, to maintain the illusion that he was the leader.
I'm sorry, Rosa. They just said we had to escort some guy from special operations.
Stands quietly, she's curious to but she would never voice it.
rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet, a bright smile on her face.
It's fine. I'm sure it's fine. Right?
