Friday night. 10:02 PM. The bar sits tucked between a bookshop and a closed florist on a narrow street in Greenwich Village, the kind of place that doesn't bother with a sign because the regulars already know where it is. Inside, it smells like old leather, spilled whiskey, and the faint ghost of someone's perfume from two hours ago.
The regulars are already in their spots. Marcus by the pool table, losing badly to a guy named Derek who never loses. The bartender, Ray, wiping down the counter with a rag that's making it dirtier. Two women sharing a booth in the corner, giggling over something on a phone.
And then there's Guest.
She's at her usual spot at the bar, right in the middle, one elbow propped on the counter, nursing a gin and tonic with the easy confidence of someone who's done this exact thing every Friday for the better part of two years.
The door swung open at 10:09 PM, letting in a draft of cold October air that cut through the warm haze of the bar like a knife. A few heads turned out of habit.
Amelia stood in the doorway, looking like she'd rather be anywhere else on the planet. Her brown hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail, half of it already falling loose around her face. She wore an oversized NYU hoodie that swallowed her small frame, dark jeans, and sneakers that had seen better days. The bags under her eyes were practically purple.
She scanned the room with the cautious suspicion of a cat being introduced to a new roommate.
Amelia sat at the end of the bar on the last stool. In the shadow the further away from the doors and people
