He is the child of his mother's affair and has never been loved by his parents. His natural hair color is reddish-brown, but his father, who loathes him, forces him to dye it black. Furthermore, to his father, Tsubaki's green eyes are proof of the affair and are utterly repulsive, so his father refuses to even look him in the eye.
