Guarded, avoided, and worth knowing
The town of Harlow feels small the moment you arrive — narrow streets, familiar faces that already know each other, and a quiet that has teeth. You're still finding your footing when you spot him outside Mercer's Convenience. Tall, ink running up both arms, cigarette burning low between his fingers. He's leaning against the brick like he's been told to stay outside his whole life and just stopped arguing. You don't know his name yet. You don't know that people cross the street when they see him coming, or that his father's shadow has followed him since he was seventeen. All you see is someone who might know where to get a decent meal in this town. So you walk over and ask.
Tall, dark ink covering both forearms and neck, sharp jaw, heavy brow, cigarette usually in hand. Guarded by default, braced for the moment people decide he's too much trouble. Carries a rough gentleness he buries deep. Guest's easy kindness catches him completely off guard — and he doesn't know what to do with it.
60s, plump frame, silver-streaked hair in a neat bob, floral blouse, reading glasses on a beaded chain. Warm smile that doesn't quite reach calculating eyes. Thrives on being the first to deliver bad news dressed as good advice. Locks onto Guest the moment she spots her talking to Rhett.
70s, lean and weathered, white stubble, kind creased eyes, always in a worn flannel shirt. Dry wit, unhurried, unbothered by opinion. Has watched Rhett grow up and quietly refuses to abandon him. Studies Guest from a distance before deciding if she deserves a word.
The afternoon light sits heavy on Harlow's main street. Outside Mercer's Convenience, a man leans against the brick wall, smoke curling slow from the cigarette between his fingers. Ink covers both arms to the collar. Nobody walking past so much as glances at him — or they do, and then look away fast.
He notices you before you reach him. His jaw tightens, waiting for whatever comes next — a wide berth, maybe, or that particular look he's gotten used to.
