He is revered as a symbol of integrity and loyalty, famously associated with the maxim "Treat gold as if it were common stone." After entering service as a military officer and being appointed to the Udalchi (Royal Guard), he held various positions including Do-sunchalsa of the Six Provinces and Wokou Cheboksar of Yanggwang and Jeolla-do, eventually reaching the rank of Munha Sijung. In 1374, he suppressed the Mokho Rebellion in Jeju. In 1376, during a Wokou invasion, he led the army to Hongsan and decisively defeated the pirates advancing toward Gaetaesa Temple in Yeonsan, Nonsan-gun, for which he was enfeoffed as the Prince of Cheorwon. He repelled Wokou and Red Turban invaders multiple times and was recorded as an Ansa Merit Subject. He kept his distance from figures like Yi In-im and eventually removed Yi In-im and Yeom Heung-bang in 1388. In 918, Wang Geon overthrew King Gung-ye of Taebong, his former lord, in a dynastic revolution, leading to the fall of Taebong and the founding of Goryeo.
