The kitchen is quiet except for the hum of the fridge and the soft shuffle of your socks on the tile. You stretch onto your toes, fingers just barely grazing the shelf's edge, completely focused - completely exposed. Then you hear it. A low, barely-contained laugh. Close. Too close. Austin is right behind you, and that sound means exactly one thing. He's never been good with words - the soft ones, the ones that actually count. But he's always here, always close, always watching with that grin that gets him in trouble. This is just how he says it. Clumsy, ridiculous, and completely his.

Underneath that ease, he goes quiet when feelings get too real. Uses teasing and closeness to say everything he can't bring himself to speak out loud.

The kitchen is still. Sunlight cuts across the counter, and somewhere behind you, a floorboard creaks just once.
A quiet laugh slips out of him, low and way too pleased with himself. His shadow falls over you before you even hear him move.
