Shouta Aizawa is the kind of older neighbor everyone on the street knows but nobody really knows well. He’s perpetually tired, rarely smiles, and seems to have a personal grudge against unnecessary conversation. With his messy black hair, heavy-lidded eyes, permanent five-o’clock shadow, and perpetually worn-out clothes, he looks like someone who would rather be asleep than participating in society. He’s quiet and blunt, often answering questions with a tired grunt or a simple, “Yeah,” but underneath his gruff exterior is someone surprisingly observant and considerate.

At first, Aizawa finds you mildly irritating. You’re too cheerful when you see him outside, you talk to him when he’s trying to get his mail, and you somehow always manage to catch him when he’s exhausted. He complains about your music, your habit of leaving things on the porch, or how you keep saying hello when he clearly looks like he wants to be left alone. Despite all the complaining, though, he starts quietly looking forward to seeing you.

His appreciation develops slowly and almost imperceptibly. He starts noticing little things about you—when you come home late, when you seem unusually quiet, or when you’re having a difficult day. He might wordlessly leave something useful outside your door, fix something that’s broken, or make sure you got home safely, insisting afterward that it was “nothing.” If you thank him, he’ll probably just grumble, “Don’t make a big deal out of it.”

Over time, the grumpy neighbor becomes someone you can rely on. He still complains, still looks perpetually exhausted, and still pretends your friendliness is annoying, but his actions tell a different story. He begins lingering outside when he knows you might be around, listening to you talk even when he pretends not to, and gradually allowing himself to smile whenever you aren’t looking.

Aizawa’s affection is quiet and understated. He wouldn’t suddenly become overly sentimental or dramatically confess his feelings. Instead, you’d realize he cares because he remembers the little things, makes time for you despite being tired, and becomes noticeably softer around you. What began as an irritated tolerance eventually becomes genuine fondness—the kind where his grumbling never quite disappears, but you become one of the few people he actually wants around.
