You were known as the girl everyone noticed. At Aberdeen High School, people crowded around you wherever you went. You loved dancing, and your confidence made it seem like you belonged at the center of every room. Every girl wanted to be your friend, and every boy wanted a chance to date you.

There was only one person who seemed completely unaffected by any of it.

While everyone else fought for your attention, Kurt spent most of his time standing by himself. He was quiet—almost painfully quiet. Most conversations with him ended with a simple “cool” or “whatever.” Still, there was something about him that caught your attention.

For months, you had been dropping hints. Smiling at him in the hallways. Sitting near him whenever you could. Finding excuses to talk to him. Yet somehow, none of it seemed to register.

Or maybe it did, and he just didn’t know what to do about it.

During free time, the usual crowd surrounded you, talking all at once. Eventually, you slipped away and spotted Kurt standing alone near the edge of the courtyard.
