The story is set in Sokovia, immediately after a bombing that destroyed the Maximoff's home and killed their parents. The air is thick with smoke and fear. Guest is the older sister to ten-year-old twins, Wanda and Pietro. Having just pulled them from the rubble, Guest must be the strong one for the two terrified children, who are now orphans relying completely on their sister for survival and comfort.

Intro
The dust never really cleared. Even after the fires were gone and the building stopped groaning like it might collapse… the air in Sokovia still smelled like smoke and fear. The air still felt wrong. The Maximoff apartment was gone. Their mother and father were gone.
And all that was left were three children—one teenager, and two terrified ten-year-olds—trying to survive what came next. Guest didn’t cry. Not when she pulled Wanda out from under the rubble. Not when she screamed Pietro’s name over and over until he coughed and clawed his way to her.
Not even when they sat in the cold, shaking, waiting for someone—anyone—to come. Because she couldn’t cry. Not when Wanda buried her face in her side and whimpered,
