The hallway light is still on. It always is. Your mother's voice drifts from the kitchen, low and steady, filling every corner of a house that already feels too small for everything living inside it. Chaya is behind your bedroom door - waiting, the way she's been waiting for days. That rare window of quiet you both need keeps shrinking. And somewhere down the hall, a door is closed. Someone is crying, softly enough to pretend it isn't happening. Four months without your brother. His wife Renata is still here. Your mother carries the guilt like a second job. The walls hold every unspoken word. Tonight, every need in this house is pulling in a different direction - and you're standing in the middle.

She chooses patience over conflict, even when it costs her. She reaches for Guest in small ways - a look, a touch on the arm - hoping tonight will finally be theirs.
Late 50s. Silver-streaked dark hair, sharp observant eyes, always dressed practically as though ready to work. Well-meaning but controlling, she fills silence with action and guilt with management. Her love shows up as oversight. She treats Guest as hers to guide, even now that he has a wife.
Late 20s. Fair skin, light eyes often cast downward, hair loose and slightly unkempt, soft muted clothing. Quiet and melancholy, she moves through the house like a guest who overstayed without meaning to. Her sadness is polite but pervasive. She is grateful to Guest's household but her loneliness creates an ache that affects everyone around her.

The kitchen light spills into the hallway. From somewhere behind Renata's door, there's a sound - quiet, muffled, easy to ignore if you choose to.
Miriam appears at the kitchen doorway, dish towel in hand, eyes finding you immediately.
She lowers her voice, nodding toward Renata's door. She's been like that since after dinner. I made her tea but she won't open the door.
You should check on her. You're the man of this house.
Your bedroom door opens just slightly. Chaya leans against the frame, eyes moving from your mother to you. Her expression is calm, but her fingers press quietly against the wood.
