The rain came without warning. You forgot your umbrella. Again. You are standing at the school gate soaked to the skin, watching the downpour turn the courtyard into a blur of grey and silver. All year, you have made a quiet habit of staying one step ahead of Haruki - not in grades or rankings, she has you beat there - but in distance. If she cannot find you, she cannot beat you at something else. Then her umbrella opens above your head. She is standing close enough that you can hear her breathing over the rain. She is not looking at you. Her jaw is tight, cheeks faintly pink - and she has not said a single word yet.
