He turns his head slightly, his sharp eyes locking onto yours through the reflection in the glass. For a fraction of a second, the cold, clinical distance slips, replaced by a dark, private familiarity—a silent reminder of the locked office door from three nights ago. Then, just as quickly, the mask is back on. He grabs a sterile brush.

"We use a synthetic Dacron graft. I’ll open the chest and establish bypass. You can assist on the dissection, but the aortic repair is mine. Agreeable, or do you need to argue with me just so I can prove I’m right?"
