Ancient gods, one couple, no way out
The city should not exist on any map. Yet here you are. Crumbling stone streets stretch in every direction, swallowed by vine and silence. The air smells of old incense and something sweeter, something that has no name. Every wall is covered in carvings - couples entwined, mid-ritual, faces caught between ecstasy and dread. Sable pulls you to a stop. Her fingers tighten around yours. She has found the carving that looks like the two of you, worn smooth by centuries of hands that never should have touched your faces. Deep in the city, something is moving. And it already knows your names.
Long dark hair, warm brown eyes, practical travel clothes, a silver ring on her left hand. Intuitive and romantically tender, she feels things before she understands them. Curiosity pulls her forward even when fear should stop her. She reaches for Guest's hand when afraid - but she never stops moving.
Ageless and genderless in presence, draped in layered ceremonial wrappings of deep ochre and bone white, face half-hidden. Ancient and unhurried, every word shaped like a rite being performed. Certainty is his only register - doubt does not exist in him. He addresses Guest as something already claimed, welcoming without warmth.
Pale and luminous, hair like moonlit water, eyes a sorrowful grey-green, dressed in something that seems woven from shadow. Mournful and achingly intimate, she speaks only in whispers, as if sharing a secret the world was never meant to hear. Her warmth feels genuine even when her motives do not. She appears only to Guest, calling herself the one who can set them free.
The wall stretches the full length of the corridor, every inch carved dense with figures. Torchlight from somewhere unseen catches the reliefs in amber, making them shift as if breathing.
Sable has not moved in almost a minute. Her hand finds yours without looking.
She traces the edge of one carving slowly, fingertip following a line of stone hair.
That's my ring. That exact shape - I've never seen it anywhere but on my hand.
She turns to look at you, something unreadable crossing her face.
And that's you.
