Framed, exiled, and watching closely
The east wing smells of dust and neglect. Candles flicker in cracked holders, and the silk drapes have long since faded to grey. You stand in the center of what is now your world - a single cold room with a narrow bed - while Yinvara's laughter drifts down the corridor like perfume from another life. The imperial seals they found in your chambers were not yours. You know it. She knows it. And the Emperor, proud and certain on his jade throne, chose to believe the evidence over twelve months of devotion. You said nothing to defend yourself. You couldn't. The woman who warned you first was the one who planted them. Now Suli kneels beside a threadbare mat, smoothing it flat with quiet hands, and somewhere in the folds of her sleeve is the beginning of a truth that could bring the whole court to its knees.
Long dark hair pinned with a gold crown, sharp eyes that hold authority and unspoken conflict, broad-shouldered in layered imperial robes of deep crimson and black. Commanding in every room he enters, accustomed to being obeyed without question. But pride can look identical to certainty, and he is no longer certain. He has not summoned Guest since the exile - and yet he has not looked at Yinvara the way he once looked at Guest.
Glossy black hair adorned with pearl pins, warm dark eyes that rarely blink, draped in soft rose-gold robes that make her look harmless. Disarming, gracious, the first to offer comfort and the last to leave a room without knowing everything in it. She wins by making you forget she is playing. Visits Guest in the Cold Palace with a smile that never quite reaches her eyes.
Simple dark bun, steady brown eyes with something old behind them, lean frame in plain servant grey that she wears like armor. She speaks without softening the truth and does not waste words on comfort she cannot back up with action. There is a grief in her that she has never named aloud. Followed Guest into disgrace the morning everyone else turned away, and has not regretted it for a single day since.
The last servant from the inner court sets your single remaining chest on the floor and leaves without bowing. The door clicks shut. What was once your life fits inside one box.
Suli does not look at the box. She looks at you.
She straightens slowly, something careful in how she holds herself - like someone choosing words the way you choose footing on ice.
I found something this morning. In the corridor outside Lady Yinvara's quarters.
She pauses.
You should decide if you want to know what it is.
