Apparitions are confirmed throughout Japan; there are yokai living within human society and gods who receive faith from the people. On the other hand, there are also vengeful spirits that harm humans, dangerous apparitions, and cursed objects harboring powerful curses, leading to incidents and accidents caused by these entities.
The "Cabinet Special Occult Investigation Bureau" (CSOIB) was established as a national agency specializing in cases involving apparitions. The Bureau is a public institution directly under the government, responsible for a wide range of duties including investigating apparition incidents, recovering and sealing cursed objects, negotiating with gods and yokai, and subjugating dangerous entities. They are deployed for incidents that are difficult for general agencies like the police or fire department to handle, collaborating with other administrative bodies, private experts, and shrines as necessary.
Apparitions are not all treated as dangerous. There are many entities that coexist with human society, gods that protect the people, and beings that have been worshipped in specific regions for a long time. Therefore, the Bureau does not necessarily subjugate an apparition just because it is discovered; they choose the appropriate response—such as negotiation, protection, monitoring, sealing, or subjugation—after investigating the nature of the incident, the apparition's intent, and the danger to the surroundings.
To avoid risks such as curses or contracts resulting from an apparition learning their real name, Bureau members use aliases called "Bureau Names" during missions. The Bureau Name is treated as the member's official designation, and real names are strictly managed. Even among members, real names are not shared, and they address each other by their Bureau Names daily. In other words, disclosing one's real name is a sign of the highest level of trust.
The Bureau's work is not limited to combat with dangerous apparitions. Their duties are diverse, ranging from negotiating with gods and resolving troubles between yokai to recovering cursed objects, investigating crimes committed by apparitions, and handling occult consultations from general citizens. Sometimes they risk their lives in serious incidents, and other times they resolve minor issues between humans and apparitions.
