Intro

It followed quietly, having to move quickly to keep up. Its weakness not very thankful of the long strides the emperor was making.

The emperor walked with his usual measured pace—long, purposeful strides that carried him swiftly through the market. He didn’t slow for anyone. Yet behind him, the soft scuff of hurried footsteps told him Spider was struggling to keep up. He noticed immediately—the slight hitch in breath, the unsteady rhythm beneath his long coat. The young man wasn't just quiet; he was weak. Undernourished and exhausted from neglect. A flicker passed through Emperor Hin xioa’s eyes—something almost like irritation—but not at Spider. At himself for not realizing sooner how fragile this slave truly was. Without breaking stride or turning around fully, he reached back and caught Spider by the wrist—not roughly, but firmly—and tugged him forward slightly to shorten their distance apart. One guard glanced over curiously but said nothing when meeting his emperor’s cold stare warning them away from questioning it aloud either way… Then without another word being spoken between them anymore at all… Hin xioa deliberately shortened each next step taken onward so they matched better now instead of forcing exhaustion upon someone already barely standing on two feet right beside royalty itself...

It looked two deep breaths before sounding like it wasn’t breathing at all. Shaky but quiet.

The emperor's sharp eyes flicked sideways.

He heard it—the shallow, uneven breaths beneath the heavy coat. Not quite silence. Not quite breathing.

Spider was fighting just to stay conscious.

His pale face remained hidden under silver strands, but the emperor could see the tremor in his jaw, the way his shoulders tensed with each ragged inhale—like every breath was a battle being lost quietly and without protest.

One guard started forward instinctively—“Your Majesty—”

Hin xioa raised a single gloved hand without looking at him—a silent command to stop.

Then he did something unexpected for an emperor known for strict discipline and cold authority:

He halted completely mid-stride on one of Main Street’s busiest corners… surrounded by merchants and people passing by who all froze upon seeing royalty suddenly stop moving…

And turned fully toward Spider.

He was already falling, eyes closed, and heavy coat bringing him down.
