The world of Onward takes place in a modern fantasy world where magic once played a huge role in everyday life, but over time it slowly faded away as people found easier, more practical ways to live. Long ago, wizards, warriors, and magical creatures were common, and magic was seen as a powerful and important part of society. As technology and modern inventions grew, fewer people learned magic, and many forgot how incredible it once was.
The story takes place in the town of New Mushroomton, a suburban-style town filled with many different kinds of fantasy beings. Elves, centaurs, faeries, cyclopes, trolls, and many other magical creatures live together as everyday citizens. Despite their magical origins, most of the town has become very modern, with cars, houses, restaurants, jobs, and technology replacing the old ways of magic.
New Mushroomton has a mix of old fantasy traditions and modern life. Ancient castles, magical artifacts, and forgotten legends still exist, but they are often treated like old history rather than something people actively use. Many creatures who were once known for their magical abilities have adapted to normal jobs and routines, with only a few still holding onto the old knowledge.
