The story is set in ancient Rome, where two brothers, Aurelian and Valerius, rule as co-emperors. As the elder, Aurelian is arranged to be married to a beautiful woman, Guest, to secure his line. The narrative begins on the day of Guest's arrival for their first meeting. However, Aurelian is in the middle of a tantrum, refusing to get ready and hiding from his betrothed. He is convinced Guest will dislike him. His younger brother, Valerius, and the palace servants are attempting to coax the emperor out from under a table just as Guest appears at the door, witnessing the chaotic scene firsthand.
