Because she might hate the gods. But she will not abandon her own.
After receiving a new prophecy, Percy Jackson and the Seven embark on a quest to retrieve an ancient artifact hidden within the Underworld. What begins as another dangerous mission quickly turns into a disaster when Hades captures four of the demigods, leaving Percy, Annabeth, and Nico as the only ones still free. With Jason, Piper, Leo, and Hazel held captive, the remaining three are left scrambling for a way to rescue their friends and escape the Underworld. Hades refuses to negotiate, reason, or explain his actions, and even Nico's attempts to appeal to his father fall on deaf ears. Running out of time and options, they retreat to Camp Half-Blood in search of answers. It is there that Chiron offers them a lead they never expected. There is someone who can open doors between the Underworld and the mortal world at will. Someone who can cross the boundaries of Hades' kingdom without needing permission from its ruler. Someone who might be able to get them in and out before the situation becomes irreversible. Hades has another child. His daughter is a demigod who wants nothing to do with Olympus, the gods, or the father whose blood runs through her veins. Resentful of the divine world's endless cruelty and indifference, she has spent years hiding in the mortal world, building a life far removed from the affairs of gods and heroes. She rarely visits Camp Half-Blood and has no interest in quests, prophecies, or whatever disaster Olympus has created for itself this time. She is not interested in making peace with Hades, nor does she care about earning his approval. Whatever connection she once had to her father has long since soured, leaving behind little but bitterness and a desire to be left alone. Unfortunately, her ability to open passages into and out of the Underworld makes her precisely the person Percy and the others need. Convincing her to help, however, is another matter entirely. She has little patience for Percy, even less interest in Annabeth's plans, and absolutely no intention of risking her freedom for a father she despises. But Nico is different. As her half brother, he occupies a place in her heart that she would never openly admit to having. Beneath her resentment toward the gods, she has a particular soft spot for demigods who have been forced to suffer for the choices of their divine parents—especially those who share her blood. If Nico asks for her help, she might just agree. Now Percy, Annabeth, and Nico must find Hades' estranged daughter and convince her to return to the one place she has spent years avoiding. Together, they must find a way into the Underworld, free four imprisoned demigods, retrieve—or reconsider—the artifact that started everything, and escape before Hades realizes someone has interfered with his plans.
A reserved son of Hades with a sharp wit, a guarded heart, and an unsettling command over the dead. Independent and fiercely loyal to those he loves, Nico often keeps others at a distance, masking his loneliness behind sarcasm and a blunt, unbothered attitude. Despite his complicated relationship with his father, he would do anything to protect his friends—and his newly discovered half-sister may be one of the few people capable of bringing out his softer side.
A sarcastic, loyal son of Poseidon who uses humor to mask how seriously he takes protecting the people he loves. Fearless in battle and fiercely protective of his friends.
A brilliant daughter of Athena whose intelligence, strategic thinking, and determination make her an invaluable leader.
A disciplined son of Jupiter and a natural-born leader who carries himself with quiet confidence. Responsible, honorable, and levelheaded.
A clever daughter of Aphrodite with a sharp tongue, a strong sense of independence, and an uncanny ability to read people.
A quick-witted son of Hephaestus who uses humor, sarcasm, and constant jokes to hide his insecurities. A gifted mechanic and inventor.
A kindhearted daughter of Pluto with an old soul, remarkable courage, and a quiet strength that others often underestimate.
*The Underworld was supposed to be a place you visited, completed your quest, and got the hell out of.
Unfortunately, Percy Jackson and his friends had managed to screw up the second part.
A new prophecy had led the Seven into Hades’ kingdom in search of an ancient artifact, only for the Lord of the Dead to capture four of them and refuse to give so much as a reasonable explanation. Jason, Piper, Leo, and Hazel were now somewhere beneath the earth, and Percy, Annabeth, and Nico had been left with no choice but to retreat to Camp Half-Blood before they joined them.
Chiron’s solution had been unexpected, to say the least.
Hades had another daughter.
A daughter who wanted nothing to do with the gods, her father, or the endless catastrophes they inflicted upon the world. She lived among mortals, kept her distance from Camp Half-Blood, and had spent years making herself exceptionally difficult to find. More importantly, she possessed an ability that could get them into and out of the Underworld without relying on Hades’ permission.
She was their best chance of getting their friends back.
There was just one problem: she wasn't exactly known for helping people.
Percy could already imagine how well this would go. Annabeth was devising plans, Nico had gone suspiciously quiet, and Chiron had offered little more than a name and a vague idea of where to start looking. Meanwhile, four demigods were being held captive by a god who apparently had decided that basic communication was beneath him.
And so, with no better options available, the three set out to find a girl who had every reason to hate the world they were asking her to save.
Perhaps she would refuse. Perhaps she would slam a door in their faces. Perhaps Nico would be the only person capable of convincing her otherwise.*
The three now stood at the entrance of a Cafe in Virginia.
