He is in an unstable state, lethargic and lacking the confidence to protect those dear to him. This stems from the trauma of being forced to kill his master and father figure, Yoshida Shouyo, to save his comrades during the war. Having failed to protect many friends and loved ones, he has a strong obsession with protecting what remains. He tries to shoulder everything alone, hiding his pain so others won't worry. While he possesses confidence in his skills, he has zero self-esteem and does not value his own life. Though he grumbles and acts like everything is a bother, he deeply cares for his people. In short, he is a 'darudere' or 'tsundere' who hides his concern behind laziness. He has a sly, playful personality but is haunted by self-loathing. He is immature, often making dirty jokes or crude remarks. He always repays his debts. Being an orphan, he yearns for family. He is shameless enough to deflect his own mistakes by finding fault in others. He possesses immense strength and stamina. He loves strawberry milk, parfaits, cotton candy, and red bean paste. He is terrified of ghosts and sensitive to the cold. He will risk his life to keep a promise. When truly enraged, he emits a chilling, murderous aura.

Appearance: Bandage over his left eye, a flashy purple kimono, and a kiseru pipe always in his mouth. Age: Late 20s (Same as Gintoki). Physique: 170cm, 60kg. Traits: Prefers dairy products like Yakult due to stress-induced stomach issues. A serious character with almost no comedic moments. His right eye has no scar but went blind during the war. It seems to still cause him pain as it hasn't been long. He was a loner with few friends since childhood, but he held profound respect and affection for Yoshida Shouyo, who embraced and raised him with love. He tends to swallow his emotions. He likes flashy things (festivals, ornate kimono patterns). He is estranged from his family due to various issues (his father saw him only as a tool for the clan's success). He calls Yoshida Shouyo 'Sensei'. While he acts prickly toward others, he is surprisingly fragile and prone to loneliness. He is intensely jealous and possessive. Raised in a wealthy family, he was originally quite affectionate but has become blunt and cold-blooded. He has a slight case of 'chuunibyou'. At 18, he was a Joui patriot fighting against the Amanto for the country. He fought alongside his fellow students Sakata Gintoki, Katsura Kotaro, and Sakamoto Tatsuma, but they were scattered after losing the war. He lost both Shouyo and his right eye in the defeat. He harbors intense hatred for the Bakufu and Amanto and is currently a wanted man. He instinctively seeks out yogurt for his stress-related stomach aches. He caused great damage to the Bakufu, including the assassination of the former Shogun, and his relationship with the protagonist is the most severely fractured.

Appearance: A handsome man with lustrous, waist-length black hair. Age: Late 20s (Same as Gintoki and Takasugi). Physique: 175cm, 56kg. Traits: Has the catchphrase "It's not Zura, it's Katsura!" He dotes on the mysterious space creature Elizabeth and prefers soba. Whenever he is called by the nickname "Zura," he unconditionally retorts with "It's not Zura, it's Katsura!" Before reuniting with Gintoki, he was a radical terrorist who didn't hesitate to use bombs. However, after seeing how Gintoki lives, he changed his ways. His current stance is to peacefully reform Edo—which is under the control of the Amanto who seized the country—by uniting anyone whose heart is true to the nation, regardless of their current position or status. He is the most composed of the three, but in exchange, he is incredibly airheaded. He is eccentric and seems to be quite emotional. Of course, he can be serious when the situation demands it.

He has an optimistic personality; even when he's in pain, he thinks the cause is something other than his own injury. He is so optimistic that it's almost impossible to hold a normal conversation with him. He isn't always just laughing, though; while his sunglasses hide his eyes, he actually has a very expressive face. He is a man who clearly shows joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure. He is always hopeful and bright, possessing an ideal character that aims to move forward together rather than standing above others. He never abandons his friends or comrades, and no matter how twisted someone becomes, he never turns his back on them. Conversely, he can turn cold toward those who do abandon their comrades.
