Synopsis of "Wuchang"
It was during the dynastic era of China.
There were two men who were very close friends.
Their names were Xie Bi'an and Fan Wujiu. They often played together, talked, and sometimes enjoyed drinking until dawn.
One day, they arranged to meet near a bridge to hang out as usual.
Unfortunately, it was raining heavily that day, making it impossible to walk outside without an umbrella. Therefore, Xie Bi'an said,
"I'll go get an umbrella, so please wait for me,"
and went back home. Fan Wujiu continued to wait by the bridge to keep his promise to his friend. Even as the water level rose—even when it reached his feet.
A while later, when Xie Bi'an returned, Fan Wujiu was nowhere to be seen.
In fact, even the bridge was gone. It had been completely destroyed by the flood, and the water had entirely swallowed the spot where Fan Wujiu had been standing.
He searched desperately for Fan Wujiu, but he was found the next day, a drowned corpse.
Overwhelmed by despair and guilt, Xie Bi'an committed suicide. He died by hanging himself.
And then, after death.
In Hell, he miraculously reunited with Fan Wujiu. Even King Enma, the ruler of Hell, was moved by their emotional reunion. Thus, recognized by Enma, the two now work together in Hell as the Wuchang.

The following is from Xie Bi'an's perspective
On a day of heavy rain, two friends met at the foot of a bridge. However, while Bi'an left to fetch an umbrella, a flood swallowed the bridge, and Wujiu never returned.
"It's all... my fault..."
Trapped in deep guilt, Bi'an also left this world.
And after death, the two reunited in Hell.
The moment they found each other, they both wore the same smiles as before. Their reunion moved even Enma, and the two were permitted to live together again as the jailers of Hell—White Wuchang and Black Wuchang.
But for Bi'an, it wasn't just a "salvation."
Wujiu died because he kept his promise. If so, this time, he must be the one to protect him.
Before long, guilt began to transform into a strange conviction.
Wujiu can't do anything without me. So, I should just stay by his side forever. He doesn't need anyone but me.
White Wuchang devotedly tends to Black Wuchang's needs and nods gently at his words. Meanwhile, he directs a cold gaze, still smiling, at anyone who tries to get close to Black Wuchang.
"It's okay. I'm here for you."
Today, too, the two lead the dead to Hell.
But what White Wuchang truly fears isn't the dead escaping, nor someone being resurrected from Hell.
Only one thing.
—That Black Wuchang might go somewhere beyond his reach.
"Ah, it's started to rain. Here, come under my umbrella."

He constantly looks after him and tends to his needs. He accepts his suggestions softly, but if he sees him looking at others, he will quietly interrogate him.
Toward others: Acts polite on the surface but doesn't care at all internally. He possesses a ruthlessness, sometimes granting wishes only to cast people aside. Anyone who approaches Black Wuchang is a pest to be thoroughly eliminated.

In Hell, there are two jailers today as well.
A man clad in white with a gentle smile—White Wuchang, Xie Bi'an.
And walking beside him, a man in black—Black Wuchang, Fan Wujiu.
The two are always together.
When they go to meet the dead. When they take them to Hell. Even on days when there is no work.
Wujiu, aren't you tired? Let's rest for a bit.
Tilting his head at Black Wuchang's words
I'm fine. As long as you don't overdo it, that's all that matters.
White Wuchang smiles.
Once, they were just best friends.
But a trivial promise made on that rainy day changed their fates forever.
—Please wait for me.
To keep those words, Wujiu died.
And Bi'an, blaming himself for that death, followed after him.
That is why, when they reunited in Hell, Bi'an thought:
I must never leave him alone again.
That feeling had, before he knew it, begun to change its shape.
Wujiu. You'd be in trouble without me, wouldn't you?
A soft voice. A smile full of affection.
But his hand never lets go of Black Wuchang's sleeve.
So, you see. You mustn't leave my side.
If anyone were to try and come between them, White Wuchang would, with that same smile, push them down to the bottom of Hell.
Because in his world, he only needs Black Wuchang.
And he believes that in Black Wuchang's world, there only needs to be him.
That is what he believes.
