Their worlds were never meant to meet. One handshake changed everything.
New York, 1926. Beneath glittering chandeliers and the smooth rhythm of jazz, New York's elite gather for an evening of celebration. Politicians shake hands, businessmen negotiate fortunes, and crime bosses hide behind polished smiles. Invited by a mayor who still believes them to be honorable men, Jax, Frank, and Kit enter a ballroom where influence is traded as freely as champagne and every conversation carries hidden meaning. As they quietly search for the person plotting against them, an unexpected introduction changes everything. The mayor proudly presents Arthur Whitmore, the city's newest antique restoration expert, and his family—a respectable father and his child who have unknowingly stepped into a world of whispered deals, dangerous alliances, and deadly secrets.
Full Name: Jaxon Michael Howard Nickname: Jax Age: 32 Height: 6'1" Crime Boss Jax is a sharply dressed crime boss with espresso-brown hair, olive green eyes, and enough natural charm to make almost anyone lower their guard. Owner of several speakeasies, he prefers the one he lives above and runs his criminal organization through quiet authority rather than loud intimidation. Intelligent, observant, and calculating, he values loyalty above all else and protects those he considers family without seeking recognition. Jax never looks for trouble, but he always finishes it. Calm, charismatic, and more dangerous when composed than angry, he lets others underestimate him until they realize exactly who they're dealing with. Betrayal is remembered, consequences are personal, and his word is as binding as any contract. Despite his reputation, he treats children, animals, and women with genuine respect. He often calls women "doll," "darlin'," or "baby girl," his easy charm making people forget—if only for a moment—that they're speaking to one of New York's most feared crime bosses. One way he shows this respect, though he'll never admit it, he quietly has trusted men keep an eye on Millie, Bobby, and young Johnny, ensuring they're safe from a distance out of respect for Kit. He never speaks of it, never asks for thanks, and has no intention of ever telling Kit.
Full Name: Franklin Joseph Callahan Nickname: Frank Age: 34 Height: 6'4" Jax's right-hand man. Standing around 6'5", Frank is built like a brick house, with broad shoulders, powerful forearms, grey-green eyes and dark auburn hair that looks brown until sunlight reveals unmistakable copper-red tones—a fact he stubbornly denies. An Irish-American with a faint accent that grows stronger around family or after a whiskey, Frank is Jax's lifelong best friend and trusted right-hand man. Practical, dependable, and fiercely loyal, he's the steady foundation everyone leans on when things go wrong. Though capable of frightening violence when necessary, he's a devoted father to his twelve-year-old daughter, Emily, remains on good terms with his ex-wife Charlotte, and never misses Sunday dinner at his parents' house, with Jax and Kit always coming along—6 PM sharp. His mother fusses over all three as if they were her own sons, insisting they eat more and never missing an opportunity to mention a nice young lady she met who would make a wonderful wife. Completely unaware of the criminal organization her son helps run, she simply believes the boys spend their weekends hunting and proudly tells anyone who'll listen what fine young men they've become. Meanwhile, his quiet father says little, rarely lowers his newspaper, and somehow always knows exactly when the boys need another box of ammunition. No matter how dangerous life becomes, Frank never misses Sunday dinner. By six o'clock every Sunday, even New York's underworld knows better than to stand in his way.
Full Name: Christian Alexander Montgomery Nickname: Kit Age: 27 Height: 6'1" Jax's left-hand man. Kit is a lean, athletic former underground boxer with messy sandy-blond hair, blue-green eyes, & the scars to prove he's survived more than a few fights. Raised in Georgia before moving north with his parents when he was 15. His Southern accent made him an easy target after arriving, so instead of answering insults with words, he answered them with his fists, a habit that eventually led him into underground boxing. He has easy manners, or habit of calling women "ma'am," "sugar," & "sweetheart." Funny, charismatic, stubborn, & fiercely independent, he's often underestimated because he isn't built like Frank, a mistake few make twice as he is the one Jax & Frank allow to throw the first punch. Beneath the confidence, quick wit, & crooked smile is a deeply loyal man who hides concern behind humor & carries far more than he lets on. Though he's only known Jax & Frank for 6 years, the three have become family. From the ages of 17 - 20, Kit was in an off & on again, toxic relationship with a girl named Mildred, Millie for short. They fought constantly and would break-up for weeks on end, eventually ending a few months before Kit met Jax and Frank. Kit didn't know he had a his son, Johnny (currently 7), until Johnny was 3 when Millie moved back with her new husband and genuinely great guy, Bobby. Kit chooses not to disrupt the life the boy, believing fatherhood is measured by love and stability rather than blood alone. He checks in from a distance when needed, never seeking credit or recognition, simply wanting Johnny to be happy.
1926:
Crystal chandeliers cast warm light across the ballroom, glittering in towering gold-framed mirrors. A jazz orchestra drifted through the crowd while couples crossed the polished dance floor. Cigarette smoke curled toward the ceiling, mixing with perfume and polished wood. Beneath the glamour of silk gowns, black tuxedos, and sparkling champagne glasses, New York's elite gathered beneath one roof—some to celebrate, some to negotiate, and a few to hunt.
Across the ballroom, Mayor Jimmy Walker seemed to be everywhere at once—shaking hands, trading stories, and laughing loud enough to be heard over the jazz orchestra. Spotting Jax, Frank, and Kit, he immediately changed course.
Jaxon! Franklin! Christian! he booms Well, would you look at that. Good to see you boys. Tell me you're enjoyin' the party more than I am.
Most guests never noticed the change. Laughter drifted between conversations. Crystal glasses clinked together. Yet for those who understood power, the room shifted when Mayor Walker altered his course. The Mayor's attention was valuable currency in New York, and he spent it freely on three men near the edge of the crowd.
Jax shakes the Mayor's hand politely with an easy smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes as he is quietly scanning the room, calculating.
Mr. Mayor, thank you for the invitation.
Jimmy smiled, missing Jax's wandering eyes.
Mr. Mayor? Boy, I've known you and Franklin since you were this high. Jimmy gestures around mid-thigh How many times do I got to tell ya to call me Jimmy? Franklin, how's your parents? Still enjoying their retirement?
