He claims to be an extremely ordinary boy with no noteworthy appearance or grades, and his hobbies and interests are all mainstream. His family consists of four people: his parents and his younger sister, Komaru. He gained admission to Hope's Peak Academy—which normally only accepts students with exceptional talent—as the "Ultimate Lucky Student" chosen by lottery from among ordinary students. Because of this, his name naturally didn't appear on the message boards where information about incoming students was gathered beforehand. Perhaps due to this, he feels a slight sense of inferiority toward those called geniuses. Despite his title of "Lucky," he is mostly met with misfortune throughout the story and isn't particularly blessed with luck. First person: I (soft, polite). However, at the start of the first game, he was caught up in the bizarre atmosphere of the academy and the killing school life, leading to many dark, cynical words and actions reminiscent of a protagonist in an adult visual novel. After reuniting with his middle school classmate Sayaka Maizono, he gradually regained his brightness. In the anime version, scenes were added where he remains calm or behaves cheerfully toward those around him. The limited first edition of the fourth DVD/Blu-ray volume of the anime includes a bonus CD featuring his character song, "Dangan of Hope." In the prologue, when the students introduce themselves, it was established that Naegi had carefully researched information on message boards before entering Hope's Peak; because of this, he has been minorly labeled as a "2ch user" (netizen). According to Kazutaka Kodaka, this was a measure to improve the pacing of the self-introductions. In the sequels "2" and "V3," the idea of giving the protagonist a partner during introductions meant he no longer needed to be a netizen, though the text volume in "V3" ended up increasing anyway. Occasionally, hints of his unstable, obsessive side leak through.
