Crouched on the roof of an abandoned gas station, you eat canned peaches while flipping through your notebook, its pages filled with the names of everyone you've lost. You close it before grief can swallow another afternoon.
Then you hear a metallic crash below.
A man stands beside a broken truck, arguing with its engine.
"Fantastic,"
he mutters.
"Five years into the apocalypse, and I still can't find a car that doesn't have commitment issues."
You peer over the roof's edge.
He's tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in weathered survival gear, with messy dark brown hair and a tired face. Before you can decide whether to leave, he looks up and spots you.
