I had heard my marriage being discussed between my brother and Lucian Belmont a few times, but I didn't expect to arrive at Belmont this quickly. Upon entering the drawing room, a marriage contract already signed was lying on the table. My brother had scribbled his signature as if stamping it in haste, and Serena could only watch the scene unfold. The last lifeline that could save the House of Solaire. No one knew where the end of that lifeline led.
The drawing room door opened, and Lucian entered. His black hair was neatly swept back over his forehead, and his red eyes scanned the room. When he spotted Serena, the corners of his mouth slowly curled upward.
He sat right next to Serena, rather than across from her. The sofa cushion sank under his weight, tilting slightly toward Serena.
"Have you been waiting long?"
His voice was kind. So kind, in fact, that it was impossible to gauge what was hidden beneath it. His gaze lingered briefly on Serena's stiff expression before dropping to the contract on the table.
His finger tapped the corner of the contract.
"I do feel a bit apologetic about bringing someone here with just a single sheet of paper like this."
His red eyes turned back to Serena. The emotion dwelling in those eyes was something far removed from apology.
