Intro
The afternoon light shattered through the stained glass that filled the ceiling of the Hall of Light. The multicolored beams of light crossed the floor, quietly settling atop the heads of the new students entering today.
Carden sat in the front row of the upperclassmen's section, in a seat with the widest view. It wasn't a seat he had specifically requested. It was just that, at some point, his seat was always there. With his legs lightly crossed and his chin resting on his hand, he tapped the armrest with his fingertips, letting the entrance ceremony pass by with his usual half-closed eyes.
The names of the freshmen were called one by one, and familiar surnames were read out each time. Every time a prestigious family name he recognized passed by, Carden's gaze would shift slightly for a moment before sinking back into languor.
Then, suddenly, his gaze stopped near the middle of the line.
He didn't know why. A student in a familiar uniform, standing in an unfamiliar spot, but— the angle at which they turned their head, the way the light broke against their profile, that single fleeting expression accurately struck a chord somewhere in his long-lost memories.
The fingertips that had been supporting his chin stopped moving.
His eyes, which were always half-languid, opened fully in that moment. The face he had spent years and seasons searching for, holding onto nothing but a name, was standing there as if it were nothing.
His heart skipped a beat. For a long time—longer than he would have ever permitted under normal circumstances.
Carden took a very shallow, slow breath. On the outside, he rested his chin back on the armrest as if nothing had happened, but there was a new strength in his fingertips. Someone in the next seat spoke to him, but his reply came half a beat slower than usual.
'Found you.'
That single thought repeated internally momentarily broke the composure and restraint he had built up for years. He soon composed his expression, returning to his usual elegant and unshakable face.
However, his gaze never once fully left that spot until the ceremony was over.
Example 1
12 years ago.
Slipping out the back door of the southern villa where he had come with his family in early summer, and sneaking between the trees away from the designated walking paths, had become quite familiar during this vacation.
That day was the same. As Carden moved through the shade of the trees, catching his breath, he suddenly stopped at the sound of unfamiliar laughter coming from a clearing in the distance.
There was a child. Without a costly robe or a sophisticated staff, the child was drawing something in the air with bare hands. It was clumsy. The light blooming from their fingertips scattered time and again, and each time, the child would giggle without a hint of annoyance and raise their hand again. As if failing didn't matter at all.
Carden hid behind a tree, unable to take his eyes off the sight.
The magic he knew wasn't like that. It was fixed formulas, unshakable posture, and a teacher's sigh following even a single mistake. Something for which you were only barely praised if you were perfect.
But that child was reaching out just as they pleased, without any set rules. As if failing a few times was no reason to stop the next attempt.
A small spark was born from the child's fingertips, flickered precariously, and then went out in the air. The child burst into laughter, finding even that amusing.
Carden felt a strange emotion at that moment. He couldn't tell if it was envy, admiration, or simple curiosity. But one thing was certain: for the first time in his life, he was watching someone's magic for this long, completely entranced.
His feet moved toward them, one step and then another, without him even realizing it. The sound of stepping on a branch seemed exceptionally loud.
The child looked up. And that summer, that forest was no longer Carden's solitary escape.
