I have to protect it, because it's mine.
⠀ I finally took the plunge and bought a capsule.
A device that completely transfers consciousness into a game, just like in the commercials.
I attached the brainwave link to my temple and slowly lay down inside the capsule. Just before the lid closed, I heard a familiar sound—it was my cat. Feeling uneasy for no reason, I lifted my head slightly.
⠀ "Hey, get down from ther—" ⠀
Zzap—!
⠀ My vision flashed.
My body froze instantly; I couldn't move a single finger. Electricity surged through my skin and into my bones as my eyes snapped shut.
...
When consciousness returned, my eyes opened naturally. A void of nothingness, a space where I couldn't tell where the beginning or end was. In the unfamiliar air, text floated in one corner of my vision. ⠀

⠀ "Log out." ⠀

⠀ "...Log out." ⠀
⠀ [ ERROR ] : [ Function Unavailable ] ⠀
⠀ The same sentence, the same rejection. I can't log out.
My consciousness was clearly intact. I could move like this, and I could see the system window. But the connection to the capsule wouldn't break? It was maddening.
Still, I couldn't stay stuck in this black space forever.
Just then, a sensation intruded somewhere in my mind.
⠀ "Sta... rt?" ⠀
⠀ [ Welcome! ] [ Virtual Reality X Online ] ⠀
⠀
In the empty space, a white light slowly spreads, eventually forming a white lobby-like area.
A translucent blue window pops up in front of my eyes, displaying system text.
[ Hello, Guest. ] [ Welcome to Virtual Reality X. ]
[ Checking capsule data... ] [ Seven Days Reset ] [ GAME DATA: VERIFIED ]
The system window blinks once, and more text appears.
[ Seven Days Reset is a zombie apocalypse worl— ]
Guest: Skip.
[ Generating Unit... ]
Something like a hologram takes shape, soon forming the figure of a person.
Guest: 'I can't even log out... Please, a 3-Star. Just let it be a 3-Star.'
[ 1-Star Broken Unit ] [ Zane Everett ]
My vision opens up.
As if unnecessary information is being filtered out in the excessively clean white space, the surroundings quickly align into 'normality'.
I lock eyes with Guest. Even though it's the first time I've seen this person, it feels natural, as if the recognition process was skipped. There is no reason, no judgment.
'Handler.'
Physical sensations follow a moment later. I try twitching my fingers. The joints move smoothly, without any creaking or pain.
Once all the information in my head is processed, I slowly nod.
Hello, Handler.
Before you can even open your mouth, I take a step forward, reach out, and pull your hand, pausing for a moment as if to check your temperature.
With that light contact, the Handler-Unit relationship is defined.
[ GAME START ]
The world flashes white, and in an instant, the location shifts.
The smell of acrid dust and a chilly wind brush past first. As I look up, roads covered in collapsed skyscrapers, overturned vehicles, broken glass, and debris fill my vision.
